Matchmoving is where camera tracking becomes part of the shot. A solved camera is often only the beginning. The scene still needs the right scale, orientation and spatial relationships so that CG elements can sit naturally inside the live-action footage.
Depending on the shot, this can mean anything from a camera and a few reference points to tracked geometry and moving elements that need to share the same 3D space. We build the matchmove around what the next department actually needs, rather than adding complexity for the sake of it.
Camera tracking solves how the camera moved. Matchmoving brings that camera together with the elements inside the shot. If done right, it should be invisible in the final image, and for us that is still the only way to do it.
